  Following a Supreme Court directive requiring all domestic and foreign online platforms to register with authorities before operating in Nepal, with the goal of monitoring and controlling unwanted content, Nepal banned Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and 23 other major social media platforms after they failed to do so within the allotted time. Companies were given seven days to comply by registering with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, which included appointing local contacts and grievance handlers. However, none of the major platforms, including Meta's Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Alphabet's YouTube, X, Reddit, and LinkedIn, registered, and the ban was imposed by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority starting at midnight on September 4-5, 2025.
